Johnny B. Denton

 

Johnny B. as his friends call him, is from a very musical and talented family. His father, Benny sang bass in a Gospel quartet most of his life, his younger sister Dixie studied music and plays the piano and organ, his older brother Jimmy also studied music and is an accomplished piano player and not to be outdone, Johnny B. also studied music and is a talented piano player and vocalist.

Johnny B. has been in the entertainment business for 43 years. He started his own band, Johnny B. Denton and the Fabulous Del-tones in the mid 60’s when he was in high school, playing locally for parties, dances and performing on regional television shows. After graduation from high school, Johnny B. and his band continued to tour the east coast from Florida up to Atlantic City New Jersey promoting their first record “A Boy Without A Heart” where Johnny B. performed at the world reknown ‘Steel Pier’ with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. From the ‘Steel Pier’ Johnny B. performed at the ‘Peppermint Lounge’ in Ocean City Maryland and many other highly rated night clubs.




 

 

In the 60’s, Johnny B. made a name for himself and had a large following up and down the east coast, but he decided in 1971, it was time to start heading west and for the first time he set out on a new adventure without his band.

Johnny B.’s first stop was Knoxville, Tennessee where he only intended to stay for a few weeks performing solo and then move on down to Nashville, But after a few days of playing in clubs around town, he was approached by a man named John Hitch who was looking for someone with Johnny B.’s talent to help him launch a new syndicated television show. A few weeks after that, Johnny B. was playing on a new sit-com television show on TNN (The Nashville Network) where his popularity soared.

Johnny B. continued making appearances throughout Tennessee performing at Opryland USA and when John Hitch decided to bring back the famous Tennessee Valley Barn Dance that was so popular back in the late 40’s and 50’s,.Johnny B. was asked to host the show and be the staff piano player, this was in the mid-70s.

The Tennessee Valley Barn Dance originated from the beautiful WNOX Auditorium in KnoxvilleTennessee. Soon Johnny B. became editor and publisher of his own entertainment magazine titled ‘The Tennessee Barn Dance News which was dedicated to giving exposure and recognition to a variety of new and upcoming artists.

In 1980, after five years performing on the Tennessee Valley Barn Dance, which by the way had become so famous, it was being syndicated throughout 28 states, Johnny B. decided it was time to move back home and start a new adventure.

Not long after moving back to North Carolina, Johnny B. started his own live radio show called ‘The Johnny B. Denton Show’, with co-host and fellow musician Jack Williford. The show eventually became so popular that it had to be pre-recorded during the day and of course this gave Johnny B. the freedom to continue touring up and down the east coast plus a two week tour in the artic circle, namely Greenland.

In 1985, Johnny B. was asked to move back to Knoxville and rejoin The Tennessee Valley Barn Dance, again as host and staff piano player as well as promoter and announcer. The show was still being broadcast live and syndicated throughout the USA.

Soon after moving back to Knoxville, Johnny B. started his own talent agency called “New Talent of the 80’s. As president of his own talent agency, he began writing and delivering “live” commercials for The Tennessee Valley Barn Dance. As managing editor, he wrote, handled advertising and published the shows regular newspaper, The Tennessee Barn Dance News.

Over his career, Johnny B. has recorded numerous records including “The Peanut Special” that became very popular when Jimmy Carter was running for President of the United States, which lead to Johnny traveling to Plains Georgia where his record was placed in Souvenir stores around town.

Everyone who knows Johnny B. will tell you he is one of the best entertainers in the music business today and that is why he is still known as ‘Mr. Entertainer’. On his newly released CD, “Just for You” Johnny B. changed his musical style to show his versatility. One of the songs he recorded was an old Dean Martin song “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” that is getting a lot of radio play from North Carolina to Tennessee all the way up to New York.

Johnny B. says that the thrill, the feel and the joy of singing is the same today as it was 43 years ago, there is nothing like it. “It is so exciting and fulfilling; Now with his new CD “Just for You”, Johnny B. is back on the road again touring and performing and cannot wait to perform for you in the very near future.
